Dr Steve Collins MBE MD is a medical doctor with additional doctorates in nutrition and science, and 35 years of experience working in nutrition across the developing world. The community-based system he developed for treating starvation at home rather than in hospitals has been adopted globally and now treats millions of children, saving hundreds of thousands of lives each year. More recently has focused on diversifying mono-cropped agricultural systems in the developing world, that are increasingly vulnerable to changing rainfall patterns. To support this, he has developed new plant-based nutritional products made from climate-resilient crops and established factories in developing countries to produce them locally. In countries such as Malawi, this approach has driven agricultural diversification, increased incomes, and improved food security and resilience. For the past 20 years, Dr Collins has also farmed a marginal hill farm in West Cork, where he has observed similar vulnerabilities caused by an over-reliance on grass-based farming. In response, he has trialled growing organic blueberries and aronia berries — high-value crops well adapted to the Irish climate and marginal soils. In particular, aronia, a new crop to Ireland, produces fruit exceptionally rich in health-promoting polyphenols, offering potential to improve both farm resilience and human health. To help create a market for Irish-grown aronia, Dr Collins founded PhyterBerry™, a brand offering a range of science-based, natural health products made from aronia berries.
