When I retired from full time work as a college lecturer (not in art) and we came to live in Kinsale I started going to pottery classes at Kinsale Pottery and Arts Centre. I had enjoyed making a few clay pieces in my early 20s. After about 9 years attending classes, during which I learned the basic skills and made a wide variety of pieces, I got my own (reconditioned) kiln set up in a glass house in the garden (past which fish swim) and started making my fish wall sculptures, gradually extending into other marine creatures such as sea slugs, and also plankton which I base on microscope photographs.
The variety of life forms in the ocean is astounding I could never tire of making new pieces. Some are based on tropical fish, others on the fascinating species to be found right here around the shores of Ireland. I shape every piece by hand and paint every piece with its own specially mixed and layered glazes. Each piece is unique.
